| I Peter 5:5-7 ‘In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Many of us have verses from the bible we particularly love to quote. One of mine is IPeter 5:7. In it we’re told to cast our anxiety; those things that concern us, to God. Now, I’ve done numerous studies about what that means. I’ve studied the meaning of “casting”; I’ve honed in on the fact that God’s caring for us is the reason we can give him our cares, but I have never linked this verse with being humble. Let’s look at it again. We’re told to cast our anxiety on God only after we’ve humbled ourselves before God and each other. To humble ourselves means to consider others’ needs and concerns more than ours. It’s not being a door mat. That would not be good for us or the other person, but it is doing what benefits them. Only after we’ve don’t that, are we told to give God those things causing us stress and concern. Are we praying and giving the Lord our concerns with a proud heart; proud of the fact that we’re right? Are we doing things our way and only when that way doesn’t pan out, giving our troubles to God? Are you struggling in relationships; maybe between you and a coworker, or you and your children? Maybe you’re facing conflict between you and your spouse. Humble yourself. Put their needs, thoughts and opinions before yours. Then surrender your concerns to the Lord and watch him work. And why will he work? Because as this verse reminds us, “he cares.” ,
